The Accent

So, somehow or another, I have picked up an Indian accent. I don't know if I would necessarily call it an accent, but I can "speak Indian" and turn it on and off whenever I please. The only time I bust it out is generally when I'm ordering a meal or when I communicate with my driver. It's almost become second nature and I rarely even notice when I change it up, but amazingly, I hardly ever have to repeat myself anymore!

I don't think I really have a Southern accent, at least not enough where it would hinder my communication any. I just have a good ole American accent when I speak, and therefore, it is difficult for Indians to understand me the majority of the time. But, as soon as I change the voice up (and also put emphasis on the wrong syllables), communication issues cease to exist!

Kim, I'm sure there is some sort of technical/clinical term for this like adaptive speech or something? Either way, it works like a charm and I'm glad I discovered it this early on!

  1. Jay, I'm pretty sure I speak for your audience, when I say, we need some type of video/audio example of this Indian speak . . .
